What Makes a Ruby?

Ruby is a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide) and gets its red colour from traces of chromium. Only red corundum is classified as ruby — all other colours of corundum are sapphires. The most sought-after rubies display a rich, vivid red with a slight bluish overtone, known as pigeon blood red.

Where Do the Best Rubies Come From?

The finest rubies in the world traditionally come from Myanmar (Burma). Burmese rubies are prized for their exceptional colour, fluorescence, and rarity — and command the highest prices at auction. Other important ruby sources include Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Madagascar.

Grading Ruby Quality

Like all coloured gemstones, rubies are assessed on colour, clarity, cut, and carat. Colour is the single most important factor — the finest rubies have a pure, vivid red hue with excellent saturation and tone. Clarity is secondary; most rubies contain some inclusions, and a slightly included ruby with exceptional colour will be more valuable than a flawless ruby with a poor colour.

Ruby Treatments

The majority of rubies on the market have been heat-treated to improve their colour and clarity. This is a widely accepted and standard practice. Some rubies are also fracture-filled with glass. Always ask your jeweller whether a ruby has been treated and how.
