Brilliant vs. Diamond: What's the Real Difference?

Many people use the terms brilliant and diamond interchangeably – yet they describe two different things. This confusion can lead to misunderstandings when purchasing jewelry. We'll clarify.

What is a Diamond?

A diamond is a natural or lab-created gemstone made of pure carbon in crystalline form. Diamonds are the hardest natural substance in the world (Mohs 10). They come in various colors – from colorless to yellow, pink, blue, or even black.

What is a Brilliant?

A brilliant is not a stone, but a cut. More precisely: the round brilliant cut with its 57 or 58 facets. This cut was developed to achieve maximum light reflection. If a diamond is in a brilliant cut, it is called a "brilliant".

Are all brilliants diamonds?

No. The brilliant cut can also be applied to other materials – such as moissanite, cubic zirconia, or sapphire. These are then technically brilliants (in terms of cut), but not diamonds.

And vice versa?

Not all diamonds are brilliants. Diamonds can come in many other cuts: Princess, Marquise, Oval, Emerald, Asscher, Cushion, Pear. These shapes create different plays of light and aesthetics.

Which cut to choose?

  • Brilliant cut (round): Maximum brilliance, timeless – the most common choice for engagement rings.
  • Princess cut: Modern, angular, intense – very popular with young couples.
  • Oval cut: Appears larger than its weight – good price-to-size ratio.
  • Emerald cut: Step cut – less fire, but noble tranquility.
