Diamond Clarity Scale: What do FL, VVS, VS, SI, and I mean?

The diamond clarity scale is one of the four criteria when buying a diamond – and often the most difficult to understand. We explain all levels practically and without jargon.

The Full Scale

  • FL (Flawless): No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare, extremely expensive. No visual difference from VS2 to the naked eye.
  • IF (Internally Flawless): No internal inclusions, minimal external blemishes. Also rare and expensive.
  • VVS1/VVS2: Very, very small inclusions – difficult to see even under a loupe. Excellent quality, overrated for most applications.
  • VS1/VS2: Small inclusions – only visible under 10x magnification. Perfect balance between quality and price – the best value for money.
  • SI1/SI2: Small inclusions – possibly visible to the naked eye (SI2). Very affordable, and for SI1 often no visible difference without a loupe.
  • I1/I2/I3: Obvious inclusions – affect brilliance and stability. Only for a very small budget or as accent stones.

Practical Recommendation

  • For most buyers: VS2 or SI1 – eye-clean, fairly priced
  • For Emerald and Asscher cuts: VS1+ – these cuts show inclusions more clearly
  • For small stones (under 0.30 ct): SI1-SI2 is perfectly acceptable

Note

A diamond with a poor cut (Fair or Poor) and perfect clarity (FL) looks worse than a VS2 with an Excellent cut. Always prioritize cut over clarity.
