Whether at a flea market, on vacation, or when buying online: jewelry is not always what it seems. We'll show you how to identify real jewelry – without laboratory equipment, but with the right knowledge.

The Most Important Thing: The Fineness Mark

Real gold jewelry always bears a fineness mark. Look for the following on the clasp, the inside of a ring, or on the bracelet bar:

• 333, 585, 750, 999 (gold content in parts per thousand)
• 8K, 14K, 18K, 24K (carat indication, more common in Anglo-American regions)
• 925, 835, 999 (silver content)
• PT950, PT900 (platinum)

No stamp = no real gold. Exception: very old pieces or fine craftsmanship without a stamp – but always have them checked by an expert.

The Magnet Test

Gold, silver, and platinum are not magnetic. If a magnet sticks to your piece of jewelry, it contains base metals. However: No magnetism is not a guarantee – brass or copper are also not magnetic.

The Weight Test

Real gold is significantly heavier than most imitations. A solid gold ring feels heavy and solid – a brass or plastic core feels lighter. With experience, you develop a feel for it.

The Discoloration Test

Rub the piece on a white sheet of paper. If it leaves black marks, it is not gold. Real gold jewelry leaves no marks. Alternatively: Dab acid (available in specialist shops) on an inconspicuous spot – real gold does not discolor.
