Stainless steel is an iron alloy with at least 10.5 percent chromium. The chromium forms an ultra-thin oxide layer on the surface that regenerates itself if damaged. This is exactly where its corrosion resistance comes from.

The practical advantage is that it is maintenance-free. Silver must be polished, gold-plated brass loses color, and white gold needs a new rhodium layer every few years. Stainless steel retains its color because it is the material itself and not a coating. Chlorine water, seawater, sweat, and disinfectants do not affect it.

How to recognize good quality

A magnet should barely stick; solid austenitic stainless steel is practically non-magnetic. The weight should match the size; very light pieces are often hollow or made of zinc casting with a steel look. The clasp is the best indicator: a milled carabiner with smooth spring action will last for years, while a stamped one made of thin sheet metal will give way after months.
