The 12 birthstones, by modern standard

The most common list of birthstones used today was defined in 1912 by the American National Retail Jewelers Association and has been updated several times since then. It is not a universal law, but it is the most frequently used frame of reference:

January, Garnet: Dark red, symbolic of passion and energy. Mohs 6.5 to 7.5, handle with caution for rings.
