Goldsmithing Craft: How Real Pieces of Jewelry Are Made
Behind every piece of jewelry is a craftsman – or a complex industrial production. Understanding how jewelry is made changes the way you look at and value it. This guide explains the goldsmith's craft – from sketch to finished ring.
The two worlds of jewelry production
Jewelry is created in two fundamentally different ways: through traditional craftsmanship (goldsmith) or through industrial series production. Both have their justification – but knowing the difference helps when buying.
Handmade: Unique piece or small series, often with a personal connection, higher costs, visible craftsmanship marks. Industrial: Large quantities, consistent quality, lower prices, no unique pieces.
The classic goldsmithing process
Step 1: Design and drawing
Every goldsmith starts with a sketch – today often as a CAD drawing (Computer-Aided Design). The design defines the shape, dimensions, stone sizes, and setting types. For a customer order: several design rounds until both parties are satisfied.
Step 2: The wax model (Lost-Wax-Casting)
A wax model of the future ring or pendant is formed – either by hand or by 3D printing. The wax model is cast in investment material, the wax is melted out (hence "Lost Wax"), and the resulting hollow mold is filled with molten gold or silver. After cooling: A raw metal piece in the shape of the future ring.
Step 3: Processing and grinding
The raw casting is cleaned, excess metal (casting seams) is removed, and the surface is filed and ground. This step requires a lot of experience – the final shape and surface quality are created here.
Step 4: Stone setting (Fassing)
One of the most challenging steps: The goldsmith sets gemstones into the prepared settings. Prong setting, bezel setting, pavé – each technique requires millimeter-level precision. A incorrectly set stone can come loose or break – consequences that the buyer only notices months later.
Step 5: Polishing
The finished ring goes onto the polishing machine – various polishing stages (rough to high gloss) make the metal shine. Matted areas are specifically left out or matted afterwards.
Step 6: Quality control and stamping
The finished ring is checked for consistency, possibly retouched, and stamped with the metal stamp (585, 925, etc.). In Germany, stamping is mandatory for genuine precious metals.
3D printing in modern goldsmithing
Today, many goldsmiths use 3D printers for the wax model instead of hand-modeled wax. This allows for more complex geometries and more precise shapes – but the rest of the process remains traditional. 3D printing does not replace the goldsmith, it gives him new tools.
