Kurz gesagt: Calculate gold value: the formula (weight × gold purity × gold price), hallmark table for all karats, example calculations, and why the purchase price is lower.

You have an old gold chain, an inherited ring, or jewelry you want to sell. But what is it really worth? Calculating the value of gold is easier than you think – if you know the right formula. This guide explains step-by-step how to calculate the material value of your gold jewelry yourself.

What Determines the Value of Gold Jewelry?

The value of gold jewelry is composed of several components:

  • Material Value (Gold Value): The value of the pure gold in the piece – this is the basis
  • Stone Value: Value of set gemstones (only relevant for genuine, certified stones)
  • Craftsmanship Value: The workmanship – rarely recognized in resale
  • Brand Value: Cartier, Tiffany etc. – paid for on the secondary market

For everyday purposes, the material value is the most important factor.

The Formula: Calculating Gold Value

Gold Value = Weight (g) × Gold Purity × Gold Price (€/g)

Step 1: Determine Karat/Fineness

Look for the stamp on the piece of jewelry (on the clasp, inside the ring, on a tag):

  • 333 = 8 Karat = 33.3 % Gold
  • 375 = 9 Karat = 37.5 % Gold
  • 585 = 14 Karat = 58.5 % Gold
  • 750 = 18 Karat = 75.0 % Gold
  • 916 = 22 Karat = 91.6 % Gold
  • 999 = 24 Karat = 99.9 % Gold

Step 2: Measure Weight

Weigh the piece of jewelry on an accurate kitchen scale or postal scale (0.1g accuracy). Have the weight confirmed by a jeweler if you are unsure.

Step 3: Look Up Current Gold Price

The price of gold fluctuates daily. You can find the current price in €/gram on financial portals (finanzen.net, gold.de) or by a simple Google search "gold price today."

Note: The price of gold is traded in USD/ounce on world markets. 1 ounce = 31.1 grams. Conversion: Price/ounce ÷ 31.1 = Price/gram

Step 4: Calculate

Example:
585 gold chain, 8 grams, gold price 75 €/g
Gold value = 8 × 0.585 × 75 = 351 €

Calculation Examples by Karat

Stamp Karat Gold Purity Gold Value for 10g and 75€/g
333 8K 33.3 % ~250 €
585 14K 58.5 % ~439 €
750 18K 75.0 % ~563 €
999 24K 99.9 % ~749 €

Why the Purchase Price is Below the Gold Value

When you sell gold jewelry, you will always get less than the calculated gold value. The reasons:

  • Gold buyers and jewelers must factor in melting costs, resale effort, and profit margin
  • Typically: Purchase price = 70–90 % of the pure gold value
  • Obtain multiple offers – price differences of 20–30 % between different buyers are normal

Jewelry with Stones: Added Value

Jewelry with genuine gemstones can have a significantly higher value than the pure gold value:

  • Certified diamonds (GIA certificate) significantly increase the value
  • Rubies, sapphires, emeralds of good quality are valuable
  • Without a certificate, the stone value is difficult to quantify – professional appraisal necessary
  • Cubic zirconia and synthetic stones have no significant resale value

Estimating Gold Jewelry Yourself vs. Appraisal

Self-calculation gives you the material value as a lower limit. For a complete valuation (especially for older, valuable, or unknown pieces), the following are recommended:

  • Jeweler's Estimate: Quick and often free; provides an indication of the market value
  • Publicly Appointed Expert: For legal purposes (insurance, inheritance, divorce); approx. 80–200 €

Gold Value with Rising Gold Price

The price of gold directly influences the value of your gold jewelry. With a 10% increase in the gold price, the material value of your gold chain also increases by 10%. This makes gold jewelry a partial inflation hedge – the material value remains real, even if the currency loses purchasing power.
