Step 1: Research your partner's style
Before any other consideration: What does your partner usually wear? Observation is the most important step:

- Does she/he generally wear jewelry or not?
- Simple or statement?
- Classic or modern?
- Does she/he have favorite pieces of jewelry? What is their style?
Ring size: Finding out without asking
