But how do you recognize what is really high quality before buying? There are five concrete signs that give reliable information without a gemmologist's training.

Sign 1: The weight reveals the base metal

Take the piece of jewelry in your hand and estimate its weight. Solid stainless steel has a density of approx. 8 g/cm³, which is significantly heavier than plastic (approx. 1 g/cm³) or thin brass. A good bracelet made of solid stainless steel feels substantial and solid. A piece of the same size made of thin brass or with a plastic core feels lighter, not always, but often that is the first clue.

The test works best in direct comparison. If you have the opportunity to hold two similar pieces, you immediately notice which one has the more solid material.

Sign 2: Material specification, and what it really means

Reputable manufacturers explicitly state the base material: "Stainless steel", "925 Sterling Silver", "585 Gold", "18k PVD". What is not a material specification: "Gold-colored", "Silver look", "Metal alloy". These terms describe the appearance, not the material.

If you do not find an explicit material indication on a product, assume that the base material is brass, zinc alloy, or copper, and that the surface is electroplated. This is not automatically bad, but it means: This surface has a lifespan, and it is shorter than solid alternatives.

Sign 3: Clasps and transitions

Quality is not shown in the visible main part of a piece of jewelry, but in the details. Look at the lobster clasp of a chain: Does it snap shut cleanly and without play? Does it open without scratching? Do the chain ends sit symmetrically and cleanly on the clasp? Do the links rub against each other or do they move freely?

On cheap jewelry, the clasps are often the weakest point, they open more easily than they should or do not close completely. This is a quality issue and a risk of losing the piece.

Sign 4: Color consistency in all places

Take the piece and turn it in all directions. Look especially at the back, inner edges, clasps, and hinge points. With solid jewelry, the color is uniform, front and back, inside and out. With cheaply gold-plated jewelry, you often see differences at these places right out of the box: slightly different shades, shiny metal spots, or sharp color boundaries where the coating was not complete.

Sign 5: Hallmarks and certification

Real precious metal carries a fineness hallmark: 925 for silver, 585 for 14k gold, 750 for 18k gold. This hallmark is legally required in the EU and is stamped directly on the piece (often on the clasp). For stainless steel, there are no mandatory hallmarks, but reputable manufacturers clearly state "Stainless steel" or "Stainless steel" on the product sheet or packaging.

If there is no hallmark and no material specification: The piece is not made of precious metal and possibly of undeclared alloys.

The price-quality relationship in fashion jewelry

Good fashion jewelry made of solid stainless steel + PVD realistically starts at 20 to 50 euros per piece. Below that, either the material is cheaper (brass instead of steel) or the coating is thinner (electroplating instead of PVD). Significantly over 100 euros for fashion jewelry without precious stones: probably a brand markup, no material difference.
