The history of jade in China

Jade has a unique position in Chinese civilization; hardly any other material is so deeply interwoven with culture, philosophy, and history:

• Neolithic period (approx. 5000 BC): Jade was already used in early Chinese cultures (Hongshan, Liangzhu) for ritual objects, Bi discs (round discs with a hole), and Cong tubes (square tubes) for cult purposes.
• Confucianism: Confucius described jade with 11 virtues of wisdom, justice, courage, purity, and other character traits. Jade is thus literally a moral stone.
• Imperial era: The imperial seal (Xi) of the Chinese emperors was made of jade. Precious jade objects were signs of imperial power and were used as diplomatic gifts.
• Popular belief: Jade protects against evil, brings luck, health, and a long life. Many Chinese people still wear a jade bangle daily as a personal protective stone.

Jade in other cultures

Jade is not only significant in China:

• New Zealand (Pounamu): The Maori call nephrite "greenstone" or Pounamu and use it for traditional ornaments, weapons, and spiritual objects. Pounamu jewelry is an important part of Maori identity and is passed down as an heirloom.
• Mesoamerica: The Aztecs and Mayans valued jadeite more than gold. It was used for ceremonial masks, grave goods, and cult objects.
• Korea and Japan: Jade also has a long history in these cultures and was used for jewelry, weapons, and ritual objects.

• Luck and protection: Jade is said to protect its wearer from negative influences and attract good luck.
• Health and long life: In the Chinese tradition, wearing jade is said to promote health and extend life.

How do you recognize jade quality?

Caution is advised when buying jade; much of the jade on the market is treated or not even real jade:

• Type A jade: Genuine, untreated jadeite or nephrite. Only polished, no chemical bleaching or impregnation. The most solid and expensive category.
• Type B jade: Jadeite that has been chemically bleached and impregnated with resin to improve color and clarity. Less valuable, as the treatment weakens the stone.
• Type C jade: Jade treated with color. Dyed and sometimes also impregnated with resin. Cheap, but not suitable for valuable jewelry pieces.
• Jade imitations: Aventurine, serpentine, prehnite, and other green stones are often sold as jade; they are pretty, but not the original.
