Cuban Link refers to a specific chain pattern: oval-flattened links that interlock and support each other. What makes it special: Each link is faceted, ground, and polished on its broad sides, which creates maximum light reflection. The characteristic intense shine of a Cuban Link comes from these polished surfaces, not from the weight of the metal alone.

The Cuban Link differs from the Panzer chain (a similar principle, but with round or oval links without faceting) and from the standard Curb Chain (flat, without the characteristic faceting of the Cuban Link). The difference lies in the treatment of the link surfaces; the Cuban Link has the most precise processing and therefore the strongest shine.

Solid or hollow: The most important quality question

Cuban Link chains are one of the categories where hollow vs. solid is particularly relevant. Wide chains (6 mm and up) in solid gold can weigh 30, 50, or even 80 grams, which is significant in price. Many inexpensive Cuban Links are hollow: same visual appearance, but a fraction of the gold content.

Hollow Cuban Links have two drawbacks: They are more prone to deformation under pressure (if you sleep on them, you can bend the pattern). And their material value is low; the price contains little real gold.

As a buying rule: If you want a Cuban Link as an everyday chain and actually want gold content for your money, you need the weight in grams and can then calculate the material value yourself. A reputable dealer will state the weight and material details.

Width and length: How proportions work

Cuban Links are typically offered in widths from 3 to 12 mm. The effect depends heavily on the width:

3 to 4 mm: Feminine, fashionable Cuban Link. Suitable for everyday wear, can be combined with other chains. For women and for more subtle men's looks.

5 to 7 mm: The classic presence. Clearly visible, but not yet a statement piece. The most common choice for men's chains.

8 mm and wider: Statement chain. Dominates the look and sets the tone. This requires a corresponding attitude and style.

Length: 50 to 55 cm for men (rests on the sternum). 42 to 50 cm for women (rests on the collarbone or just below). For very wide Cuban Links (8 mm and up), 50 cm for women and 55 cm for men is the most aesthetically pleasing measure.

The clasp problem with Cuban Links

Wide, heavy Cuban Links place high demands on the clasp. A standard lobster clasp designed for a 2 mm anchor chain is too weak for a 50-gram Cuban Link. Good Cuban Links have a box-clasp mechanism with a safety click, which securely holds the weight of the chain.

Before buying: What does the clasp look like? Is it made of the same gold as the chain (hallmark located there)? Does it snap shut cleanly? Does it stay closed when hanging? A weak clasp on a heavy Cuban Link is the most common reason for loss.
