Buying Lab Grown Diamonds: What You Need to Know – an Honest Assessment
Lab-grown diamonds have been one of the most discussed topics in the jewelry market in recent years. On one side: proponents who emphasize lower prices, ethical production, and chemically identical quality. On the other: critics who point to a lack of resale value and falling market prices. Anyone buying a lab-grown diamond today should be aware of both sides.
This article provides an honest assessment – without being a sales pitch for either side.
What Lab-Grown Diamonds Really Are
Lab-grown diamonds (also called LGD or synthetic diamonds) are real diamonds. Chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds: pure carbon in a diamond structure, Mohs hardness 10, the same refractive index (2.42), the same dispersion. No lab test in the world can detect the difference without specialized equipment – and even specialized equipment needs specific characteristics to differentiate.
There are two manufacturing methods:
HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): Carbon is forced into the diamond structure under extreme pressure (approx. 5 gigapascals) and high temperature (1,300–1,600 °C) – similar to the natural conditions in the Earth's mantle. Production takes a few days to weeks.
CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition): Carbon gas is deposited layer by layer on a diamond substrate in a chamber. A more precise process, often preferred for larger, purer stones.
The Price Advantage – and Its Catch
Lab-grown diamonds currently cost 60 to 80 percent less than comparable natural diamonds of the same quality (4C). A 1-carat diamond in G/VS1/Excellent quality costs about 5,000 to 8,000 euros as a natural stone, and 800 to 1,500 euros as a lab-grown diamond.
This is a real, significant price difference – but it has a catch: The prices for lab-grown diamonds have been falling sharply and continuously since 2020. The same stone that cost 1,500 euros in 2021 will cost significantly less in 2026. This is due to greatly expanded production capacity and increasing supply.
What this means: Lab-grown diamonds do not have a stable resale value. Anyone who wants to sell a lab-grown diamond in three years will get significantly less than the purchase price – because prices will have continued to fall. As an investment: unsuitable. As a gemstone: fully valuable.
Ethics: The More Complex Story
Lab-grown diamonds are often marketed as an "ethical alternative" because they do not require mining. This is true – but the picture is not complete.
Production is energy-intensive: HPHT and CVD processes consume significant amounts of electricity. If this electricity comes from fossil energy sources – which is the case in some producing countries – the ecological footprint is not automatically better than that of responsible mining.
At the same time, the decline in diamond demand due to lab-grown alternatives also affects mining communities in Botswana, Namibia, and other countries whose economic stability depends on diamond exports.
The honest assessment: Lab-grown diamonds are not automatically better or worse ethically. They are different. Those who take the ethical dimension seriously should know both sides of the story.
Certification: Only GIA and IGI are Reliable
Lab-grown diamonds are certified by the same institutes as natural diamonds. The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and the IGI (International Gemological Institute) are the most reliable certification bodies. Their certificates for lab-grown diamonds are marked with the addition "Laboratory-grown" – the 4Cs (Carat, Color, Clarity, Cut) are evaluated identically.
Other certification bodies exist but are less standardized. When in doubt: request GIA or IGI.
For Whom Lab-Grown Diamonds Are the Right Choice
If you want maximum visual impact for a fixed budget, without worrying about resale value: a lab-grown diamond is the logical choice. A larger, better-cut stone for the same money.
If you see jewelry as a long-term investment or attribute symbolic-material value to a piece (engagement ring, heirloom): a natural diamond remains the safer option for stable material value.
Both are real diamonds. The decision is a matter of priorities, not a matter of quality.
