Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral (Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂) formed by the weathering of copper ores. The characteristic green is a direct result of its high copper content—the same element responsible for green oxidation spots on copper roofs and statues. The concentric banding (also called eye-pattern or agate-pattern) is created by rhythmic growth in hydrothermal environments.

With a hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, malachite is softer than most gemstones, making it more sensitive to scratches and acids. It is best worn as a pendant, stud earring, or bracelet, rather than as a ring, since rings are subjected to significantly more wear and tear.
