What is Obsidian?
Obsidian is not a mineral in the classic sense – it is amorphous volcanic glass. Rapid cooling of silica-rich lava creates a glassy rock without a crystalline structure. Obsidian is thus one of the few "materials" created by a geological process (volcanic eruption) that reaches thousands of degrees. Mohs hardness: 5–5.5. Obsidian Varieties

Knives, arrowheads, and razor blades made of obsidian were traded over thousands of kilometers (Neolithic obsidian trade routes are archaeologically proven). In Mesoamerica (Aztecs, Mayans), obsidian was sacred – used for mirrors, sacrificial knives, and as a portal to the underworld. The Aztec deity Tezcatlipoca ("Smoking Mirror") was associated with obsidian.
