Peridot Jewelry: The Stone of Light and Summer
Peridot is the only gemstone that occurs in just one color – and what a color it is: bright grass-green to rich olive-green, infused with warm yellow. No other stone carries the same sunshine within it. This guide explains everything about peridot jewelry.
What is Peridot?
Peridot is the gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine (magnesium-iron silicate). The characteristic yellow-green comes from its iron content – the more iron, the darker and richer the green. Peridot literally comes from deep within the earth: it forms in the upper mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanic activity. Even more fascinating: peridot has been found in meteorites – it is one of the few gemstones of extraterrestrial origin. Mohs hardness: 6.5–7.
Peridot Hues
- Light Green-Yellow: The most delicate peridot – almost transparent, very fresh
- Grass-Green: The most classic peridot shade – bright medium green
- Olive-Green: Darker, richer – more depth and maturity
- Golden-Green: Very high yellow content – warm and sunny
The best quality: Intense, pure green without too much yellow or brownish tint.
History: From Pharaoh to Meteorite
Peridot has an extraordinary history. In ancient Egypt, the pharaohs called it the "gem of the sun" and believed it was a gift from the sun god Ra. The famous island of Zabargad (in the Red Sea) was the main source of peridot for over 3,500 years – the name "Zabargad" simply means "peridot" in Arabic. Cleopatra is said to have actually owned peridot for her "emerald" collection – the Greeks knew no difference. Peridot is mentioned in the Bible in the breastplate of the High Priest Aaron.
Meaning of Peridot

- Protection: Historically worn as a protective stone against evil spirits and depression – especially when set in gold
- Growth and Renewal: The green color connects peridot with nature, growth, and new beginnings
Wearing Peridot Modernly

- Peridot Stud Earrings: Oval or round cabochons – an instant summer color accent
- Peridot Pendant: Teardrop-shaped peridot on a delicate chain – very light and fresh
- Peridot in Summer Stack: Together with aquamarine and citrine – the fresh, bright summer trinity
