Pearl Shapes Explained: From Round to Keshi
Pearls come in many different shapes – and each shape has its own aesthetic and meaning. From the perfectly round pearl to the organically free baroque pearl: This guide explains all important pearl shapes and their use in jewelry.
How Pearl Shapes Are Formed
A pearl is formed when a mollusk coats a foreign body with nacre. The shape depends on the nature of the nucleus (the core that is inserted), how the mollusk reacts, and whether the nucleus can move while the nacre is being built up. Round pearls are the rarest and most expensive – they require a perfectly round core and ideal growth conditions.
Shape 1: Round Pearl
The most classic and coveted shape – a perfect sphere. In the grading scale, it is the highest quality pearl shape. "Eye round" means that the pearl appears as a perfect sphere to the naked eye. Truly geometrically perfect pearls are very rare and accordingly expensive. It is the first choice for classic pearl necklaces and formal pearl jewelry.
Shape 2: Semi-Round Pearl
Almost round but with slight variations – the most common pearl shape in medium to good quality. For most observers, it is indistinguishable from a truly round pearl. A good compromise between appearance and price.
Shape 3: Oval Pearl
Longer than round, symmetrically oval. Very elegant and flattering as stud earrings or pendants. Appears modern and has a different energy than round pearls – calmer, more elongated, more feminine in the classical sense.
Shape 4: Drop Pearl
Pear-shaped – wider at one end, narrower at the other. Very popular as dangling earrings because they offer both movement and elegance. The drop pearl is the most natural of all pearl pendants.
Shape 5: Baroque Pearl
No regular shape – free, organic, individual. Each baroque pearl is unique. Long considered a "flaw," the baroque pearl is very trendy in 2027: Its irregular shape communicates nature, organism, and imperfection as beauty. Perfect in the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic. Very expressive as pendants or large statement dangle earrings.
Shape 6: Keshi Pearl
Formed as "bycatch" in cultivation: Small, flat to irregularly shaped pearls without a nucleus, consisting entirely of nacre. Keshi pearls therefore have a particularly intense luster – more than normal cultured pearls. Very popular in modern jewelry. As cluster earrings or necklaces with a free arrangement, they are very organic and artistic.
Shape 7: Coin Pearl
Flat, round pearl – like a coin. A very modern interpretation of the pearl shape, particularly popular for pearl necklaces where the coin pearls fit together like a puzzle. Gives necklaces a different visual depth than round pearls.
