Measuring Ring Size: Methods and Common Mistakes

How Ring Size is Measured

Ring sizes in Germany (and most European countries) are given as the inside diameter of the ring in millimeters. Ring size 17 means: The inside ring diameter is 17 mm. Alternatively: Inside circumference in millimeters (circumference = diameter x 3.14).

Method 1: Measuring an Existing Ring (Most Accurate Method)

If you have a ring that fits well:

1. Measure the inside diameter with a ruler (from inner edge to inner edge)
2. Read off the measurement in millimeters
3. This number is the ring size

Even more accurate: Place the ring on paper, trace the inner surface, and measure the diameter of the drawn circle.

Method 2: Paper Strip Method

1. Wrap a narrow strip of paper (approx. 5 mm wide) once around your finger
2. Mark where the strip overlaps with a pen
3. Unwrap the strip and measure the length from the beginning to the mark – this is the circumference
4. Circumference divided by 3.14 = diameter (ring size)

Method 3: Ring Sizer (Ring Gauge)

Jewelers have ring sizer sets (plastic rings in all sizes) – free measurement in any jewelry store. This is the most accurate method because it simulates a real ring fit. Recommendation: If possible, always have it measured at a jeweler.

Method 4: Online Ring Size Guides

Many online retailers offer printable PDF ring sizers. Important: When printing, set it to 100% size (no "fit to page") – otherwise the scaling will be incorrect. Then use as per Method 1.

Common Mistakes

• Fingers too cold or too warm: Measure your fingers in the morning after waking up – they are thinnest then. Measure at midday for the average value.
