Resizing a Ring: What's Possible?
A ring no longer fits – it's too loose, or too tight. Can it be changed? Yes, in most cases, resizing a ring is possible. We explain how it works, what it costs, and when it's not feasible.
Resizing a Ring Down: How Does It Work?
The goldsmith cuts out a small piece from the ring shank and solders the ends back together. Afterward, the ring is polished – the seam is invisible. Possible for: most gold rings, up to 2–3 sizes smaller.
Resizing a Ring Up: The More Complex Process
Here, a small piece of gold is inserted into the ring shank, and the shank is stretched. Alternatively, the ring is cut open on the shank and lengthened with a piece of gold. More complex than making it smaller, but well achievable up to about 2 sizes.
What Does It Cost?
- Ring reduction: approx. €30–€60
- Ring enlargement: approx. €50–€100
- White gold and platinum may be more expensive
- Rings with stones: case-by-case – prices upon request
When is Adjustment NOT Possible?
- Rings with stones that encircle the entire circumference (eternity rings)
- Titanium rings – the metal is too hard to work with
- Very thin, delicate rings – too little material
- Crafted pieces with special textures that would be visible after intervention
How Do I Measure My Ring Size?
- Have it measured at a jeweler (free of charge)
- Trace a fitting ring on paper and measure the diameter
- Online ring size app (guidance, not precise)
Tip: It's Better to Buy Slightly Too Large
A ring that is slightly too loose is easier to reduce in size than a ring that is too tight is to enlarge. When in doubt, always choose the next size up.
