Determine ring size: How to find your perfect size
You want to buy a ring online – but don't know your size? That's the most common problem when shopping for rings online. This guide shows you all the methods to determine your ring size, explains international size charts, and tells you what to look out for when buying.
Method 1: Measure circumference with a paper strip
This is the most accurate method for home:
- Cut a paper strip about 1 cm wide and 10 cm long
- Wrap it snugly (but not constrictingly) around your finger – at the spot where the ring will sit later
- Mark where the paper overlaps
- Measure the length in millimeters – this is your finger circumference
- Look it up in the table (e.g., circumference 52 mm = ring size 52)
Pro Tip: Measure in the evening and after physical activity – fingers are slightly swollen then. This prevents the ring from being too loose in the morning.
Method 2: Measure the diameter of an existing ring
Do you already have a ring that fits well? Measure the inner diameter in millimeters with a ruler. Multiply by π (3.14159) – this gives you the circumference. Or look directly in the diameter chart.
Ring Size Chart: Germany / Europe (ISO Standard)
In Germany and Europe, the ring size is given as the inner circumference in millimeters:
- Size 48 – Inner diameter 15.3 mm – very small finger
- Size 50 – Inner diameter 15.9 mm – small women's finger
- Size 52 – Inner diameter 16.6 mm – most common women's size
- Size 54 – Inner diameter 17.2 mm – medium women's finger
- Size 56 – Inner diameter 17.8 mm – larger women's finger / small men's finger
- Size 60 – Inner diameter 19.1 mm – most common men's size
- Size 62 – Inner diameter 19.7 mm – larger men's finger
International Conversion Chart
If you're shopping in an international online store:
- DE/EU 52 = US 6 = UK L = JP 12
- DE/EU 54 = US 7 = UK N = JP 14
- DE/EU 56 = US 7.5 = UK O = JP 15
- DE/EU 60 = US 9 = UK R = JP 19
Tips for the correct ring fit
- Wide rings (band ring, signet ring): Order half to a full size larger – wide rings fit more snugly.
- Knuckle joints: If your knuckle is wider than the base of your finger, determine both circumferences. Choose a size that fits over the knuckle – a jeweler can adjust the ring at the base with an inner rib.
