Measuring Ring Size for Men: All Methods Explained

Buying a ring without knowing the ring size is risky. Especially for men who rarely wear rings, measuring can be a challenge. We explain all common methods for buying rings for men.

Method 1: Have it measured at a jeweler

The most precise method. A ring sizer set contains sample rings in all sizes – just try them on, and you'll find the perfect size. It's free at any jeweler. Always recommended for important purchases (wedding rings, expensive rings).

Method 2: Measuring the inner diameter

Place a suitable ring on white paper, measure the inner diameter (with a ruler or caliper). Compare with the size chart:

• Diameter 15.7 mm = Size 49
• Diameter 16.5 mm = Size 52
• Diameter 17.3 mm = Size 54
• Diameter 18.2 mm = Size 57
• Diameter 19.1 mm = Size 60
• Diameter 20.0 mm = Size 63

Method 3: Tape measure/string method

Wrap a string or narrow strip of paper around your finger, mark the circumference, and measure the length. Divide by π (3.14159) = diameter. Then use the table.

Important notes for men

• Measure in the morning – fingers are slightly smaller then than in the evening
• Dominant hand often has larger fingers – for which hand is the ring being bought?
• Wide rings (over 8 mm) fit tighter than slender ones – choose 0.5 to 1 size larger
• Fingers are slightly thicker in summer than in winter
