Storing jewelry correctly: The system to beat the chaos drawer. In short: Good jewelry storage follows three principles: hang chains (or store them laid flat and fastened individually), give small items compartments instead of a pile, and store delicate materials separately from durable ones. Add a fixed place for each category. Then the morning search ends, and the knot drawer becomes a thing of the past.

Principle 1: Hang chains or lay them flat and fastened

The arch-enemy of any chain is loose, tangled storage. Open chains will thread themselves into each other in a drawer (the knot guide explains why). Two solutions: hanging on hooks, a rack, or a jewelry stand, or lying flat, but ALWAYS with the clasp closed and each chain in its own compartment or pouch. Snake chains prefer to be stored hanging because they are prone to kinking.

Principle 2: Compartments for small items

Ear studs, rings, and charms need structure: A compartment box (or the pillbox trick from the travel guide) keeps pairs together and surfaces scratch-free. Rule of thumb: one pair or one ring per compartment. Metal resting on top of other metal and rubbing together creates micro-scratches over time, even with hard stainless steel against softer stones and details.

Principle 3: Separate materials

If you own genuine silver in addition to stainless steel, store it separately and with as little air as possible (zip-top bags). Silver tarnishes due to sulfur in the air, stainless steel does not. Pearls and delicate stones also get a soft extra compartment. The stainless steel part of your collection, on the other hand, is undemanding: dry and sorted is perfectly sufficient; no airtight sealing or anti-tarnish strips are necessary.

The location factor

The bathroom is the most popular and the worst place for jewelry: humidity, hairspray mist, and the risk of it falling into the sink. Better: bedroom or hallway dresser, close to your getting-dressed routine. Exception with a system: a small tray in the bathroom ONLY for pieces removed before showering; with a waterproof stainless steel collection, this tray remains happily empty.
