Jewelry and Hair Care: What to consider during blow-drying and coloring appointments
Whether blow-drying, straightening, curling, or during a color and keratin treatment at the hairdresser – these activities have surprisingly significant effects on jewelry. This guide explains what to consider regarding jewelry during hair care activities and how to protect your favorite bracelet.
Blow-drying and Heat Styling
A hairdryer reaches temperatures of 80–120 degrees Celsius. Direct heat radiation on jewelry can have various effects:
- Gold-plated jewelry: Extreme heat can weaken the bond between the gold layer and the base metal – a slow process, but regular blow-drying directly over jewelry accelerates wear.
- Soft stones: Opal and some organic stones can develop cracks with repeated heat exposure.
- Elastic bracelets: The elastic band of pearl bracelets can become brittle with regular heat exposure.
Recommendation: Do not expose necklaces directly to hot air when blow-drying. Earrings can remain. It's better to remove bracelets if they are in the hot air zone.
Hair Straighteners and Curling Irons
200 degrees Celsius and direct contact: This is the greatest heat danger for wrist jewelry. A bracelet that accidentally touches a hair straightener can be permanently damaged – gold plating burns, plastic elements melt, stones can crack. Rule: Remove all bracelets and rings before using a hair straightener or curling iron.
Hair Dyeing and Chemical Treatments
Hair dye contains ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, and other chemicals that can aggressively affect metal alloys:
- Gold-plated jewelry should be completely removed when dyeing hair
- Silver jewelry can become stained or dark due to dyes
- Real gold is more robust, but even here: remove it to be safe
- After the dyeing appointment: wash hands and neck thoroughly before putting jewelry back on
Keratin Treatment and Brazilian Blowout
These treatments contain formaldehyde-containing compounds and are smoothed in at very high temperatures. Remove all jewelry before a keratin treatment begins – both because of the chemicals and the heat.
Hairspray and Dry Shampoo
Hairspray (alcohol-based) and dry shampoo (starch particles) settle on jewelry and can dull it or become lodged in settings. Earrings and necklaces are particularly affected – always turn them aside briefly or cover them before spraying.
At the Hairdresser: Bring Jewelry or Leave it at Home?
For longer appointments (dyeing, perms): It is advisable to leave necklaces at home (they will get in the way during washing and processing), earrings can remain if they are small, bracelets are better left at home. For short cutting appointments: Jewelry can easily remain if you are not sitting in the hot air zone.
