Kurz gesagt: Jewelry for Children: From what age is which jewelry safe, what materials are suitable, and what suits which age – from baby to teenager.

When can a child wear jewelry for the first time? Which pieces are age-appropriate and safe? And how do you find jewelry that grows – literally – with the child? These are questions many parents and grandparents ask themselves. Children's jewelry is a special topic where safety, material quality, and age-appropriate design must go hand in hand. In this comprehensive guide, you will find all the answers.

Jewelry and Children – What Does Science Say?

From a safety perspective, there are clear recommendations for children's jewelry:

  • Babies under 1 year: No jewelry. Necklaces and bracelets pose a strangulation and swallowing risk. Small parts like pendants or earring backs are choking hazards.
  • Toddlers 1–3 years: If at all, only very short necklaces (30–35 cm) with a safety clasp (opens when pulled) and under strict supervision. Best to avoid jewelry altogether.
  • Preschoolers 3–6 years: Simple, robust jewelry is possible. Earrings only after piercing (not recommended before age 4). No jewelry while sleeping.
  • School children 6–12 years: Age-appropriate jewelry is fine. Ear piercing is very common at this age. Self-responsibility gradually increases.
  • Teenagers 12–17 years: Jewelry like adults, with attention to material.

Safety Requirements for Children's Jewelry

Children's jewelry in the EU must meet strict safety requirements (EN 71, Toy Directive, and REACH Regulation):

  • No small parts: Anything that can detach and is smaller than 3.17 cm is considered a choking hazard for children under 3 years old.
  • No nickel: EU law prohibits nickel release exceeding 0.5 μg/cm²/week for children's jewelry.
  • No dangerous chemicals: No lead, no cadmium, no toxic coatings.
  • Safety clasps: For necklaces for toddlers, safety clasps that open when pulled are mandatory.

The Best Materials for Children's Jewelry

Stainless Steel 316L (Recommendation No. 1)

Hypoallergenic, nickel-free, robust, easy to clean, and waterproof. Stainless steel can withstand school life, sports, and water without problems and does not cause allergies in most children. Very affordable.

Titanium

The most skin-friendly metal – ideal for fresh ear piercings and sensitive children. Lighter than stainless steel and absolutely nickel-free.

Sterling Silver 925 (Rhodium-plated)

An elegant option for special occasions (baptism, birthday, communion). Rhodium-plated silver is less allergenic than non-rhodium-plated. Requires a little more care.

Real Gold 585

For baptismal jewelry and more valuable occasions. Durable and skin-friendly.

Age-Appropriate Jewelry: What Suits Which Age?

Babies (0–1 year)

No jewelry generally recommended. If for photos or special moments: only extremely short, one-piece items without detachable elements, only under direct supervision and removed immediately afterward.

Toddlers (1–3 years)

Very short bracelets with unbreakable clasps or elastic bands made of safe materials. No chain jewelry. Ear piercing not yet recommended at this age.

Preschool (3–6 years)

Simple bangles, short children's necklaces (35 cm) with a safety clasp. After ear piercing: titanium stud earrings for the healing phase.

School Children (6–12 years)

Wider selection: necklaces with zodiac signs, animal or flower pendants, friendship bracelets, initial pendants. Earrings after complete healing.

Teenagers (12–17 years)

Almost everything like adults – but special attention to hypoallergenic materials for fresh piercings and long wearing times.

Popular Children's Jewelry Designs

  • Zodiac sign pendants: Children love to wear their zodiac sign
  • Animal pendants: Cat, dog, unicorn, butterfly – animals appeal universally to children
  • Initial pendants: One's own initial as a pendant – personal and beautiful
  • Birthstone jewelry: A small ring or stud with the birthstone – very popular for school children
  • Friendship bracelets: Textile or bead bracelets to exchange with best friends
  • Baptismal cross/chain: The classic baptismal gift – short chain with a small cross pendant

Jewelry for Special Occasions in Childhood

  • Baptism: Delicate chain with a cross, angel, or protective stone in real silver or gold
  • First Communion / Confirmation: More elegant jewelry – cross, heart pendant, or birthstone ring
  • First day of school: A small necklace with a star pendant (for success) or a compass (for one's own path)
  • Birthday: Zodiac sign jewelry or a birthstone stud
