Jewelry by Relationship Status: What to Wear When?
Jewellery and Relationship Status: What Does What Mean?
Jewellery and relationship status are closely intertwined – from the promise ring to the wedding ring, there's a complete system. We explain what traditionally means what – and what applies today.
The Promise Ring
A ring that symbolises a promise – even before engagement. Not a formal sign, but a deliberate one: I am for you. Traditionally worn on the left ring finger until it is replaced by the engagement ring.
The Engagement Ring
Official signal: We're getting married. Worn on the ring finger of the left hand in the USA and many countries. In Germany, traditionally on the ring finger of the right hand – as an engaged person, then taken over or replaced as a wedding ring.
The Wedding Ring
Simple, significant, lasting. Worn on the ring finger of the left or right hand (regionally different). In Germany, the right hand; in Anglophone countries, the left hand.
The Eternity Band as a Renewal
Often given for a milestone wedding anniversary or after the birth of the first child – as a renewal of the promise, as a thank you for the family.
What Applies Today?
All rules have softened – rings are worn freely, without conventions. The left ring finger is no longer taboo for unmarried people; wedding rings are also worn on the right. The meaning lies with the wearer, not in the hand.
