Kurz gesagt: Jewellery Spring Cleaning: 5 Steps (Inventory, Visual Inspection, Material-Specific Cleaning for All Types, Repair List, Re-storage) and Cleaning as an Annual Ritual.

Once a year, every jewelry collection should undergo a thorough spring cleaning – all pieces cleaned, all clasps checked, all stones secured. This comprehensive cleaning guide explains the process for all materials and provides a practical checklist.

Why an annual jewelry check makes sense

During everyday cleaning, small things are often overlooked: a slightly loose stone, a chain clasp that no longer locks cleanly, heavily tarnished silver, a bent setting. The annual check finds these problems before they become bigger – saving costs through timely prevention.

Step 1: Complete Inventory

Lay all pieces on a clean table and categorize them:

  • Gold jewelry (real)
  • Silver jewelry
  • Gold-plated jewelry
  • Stainless steel jewelry
  • Jewelry with delicate stones (opal, turquoise, pearls, moonstone)

Step 2: Visual Inspection of Each Piece

For each piece, use a magnifying glass (or your smartphone's macro mode):

  • Is each stone firmly seated? (Press gently – no wobbling)
  • Are all prongs intact? (No bent or missing prongs)
  • Does the clasp lock securely? (Test carabiners several times)
  • Are chain links intact? (No open spots)
  • Does the gold plating show signs of wear?

Step 3: Material-Specific Cleaning

Real Gold

Dish soap bath (1 drop + lukewarm water, 20 min), soft brush, rinse, pat dry. Optional: Gold polish for extra shine.

Silver (heavily tarnished)

Aluminum foil method: Aluminum foil in a bowl, hot water + 1 tbsp salt + 1 tbsp baking soda, soak silver for 5-10 min. Tarnish is removed electrochemically. Then rinse and polish.

Gold-plated jewelry

Only use a damp soft cloth – no soaking, no brushing, no abrasive agents.

Stainless Steel

Dish soap bath + soft brush. Very robust, can withstand stronger cleaning.

Delicate Stones (Opal, Pearls, Turquoise, Moonstone)

Only use a damp soft cloth – never soak or brush.

Step 4: Note Repair Needs

After the check: List all pieces that need to go to the jeweler. In spring, waiting times are often shorter than before Christmas.

Step 5: Proper Re-storage

After cleaning: Store each piece separately (zipper bags for silver, small compartments for rings). Place anti-tarnish strips in the jewelry box.

The Annual Cleaning as a Ritual

Some people turn jewelry spring cleaning into a ritual: with a cup of tea, with music, slowly and deliberately going through the collection – picking up each piece, cleaning it, remembering when they last wore it. A special kind of jewelry meditation.
