The most common jewelry damage and their solutions

Torn or broken chain

Loose or lost stone

Loose stone: Go to the goldsmith immediately before it gets lost. Bending prongs is inexpensive (€15 to €30). Lost stone: Buy a replacement stone + have it set. Cheaper for zirconia (€5 to €30), more expensive for gemstones (depending on the stone). When is it not worth it? If the jewelry has hardly any value and the replacement stone would be more expensive than the piece itself.

Bent ring

Repairable? Yes, the goldsmith will bend the ring back into shape on a ring mandrel and polish it. Costs: €15 to €50 depending on the effort. For solid gold: always makes sense. For very thin wire rings: May break when bending back.

Broken eyelet/clasp

Replace clasp: New lobster clasps or spring rings cost €10 to €25 at a goldsmith, including labor. A very sensible repair that prevents further loss of the jewelry.

Severely tarnished silver

No goldsmith needed: Treat at home with the aluminum foil-salt method or a professional silver polishing cloth. For engravings or delicate details: Visit a goldsmith for professional ultrasonic cleaning.

Worn-off gold plating

Have it re-plated: A goldsmith can re-electroplate gold-plated jewelry. Costs: €20 to €60 depending on the size of the piece. When is it worth it? For a piece with emotional value or a solid base material (sterling silver (925)). For cheap base material: Rather a new purchase.

White gold yellowed (rhodium plating worn off)

Renew rhodium plating: Standard service at a goldsmith. Costs: €30 to €80. Recommended every 1 to 3 years for white gold worn daily.

The goldsmith visit: What to expect?

1. Bring the piece to the goldsmith, preferably with photos of the damage
2. Get a cost estimate (in Germany free of charge for minor repairs)
3. Repair time: Simple repairs: 1 to 3 days. More complex ones: 1 to 2 weeks.
4. Quality control upon pickup: Is the stone secure? Is the surface nice? Function checked?

The rule of thumb: Emotional value decides
