Can you wear jewelry to bed? Everything you need to know
Many people sleep with jewelry on – out of convenience, because they forget, or because a particular piece is so significant that they never want to take it off. But is that really okay? Does it harm the jewelry? Does it harm you? This guide answers all questions about wearing jewelry while sleeping.
Does sleeping harm jewelry?
The short answer: Yes, for certain materials and types of jewelry. The long answer:
- Gold-plated jewelry: The gold plating is acceleratedly worn away by night sweats and the warmth in bed. Those who sleep with gold-plated jewelry daily significantly shorten its lifespan.
- Necklaces: While sleeping, you unconsciously twist and pull – necklaces can get tangled, clasps can break, or the metal can permanently bend.
- Rings: Finger temperature changes during sleep; fingers can swell and shrink slightly. Tight rings may feel tighter in the morning. For rings with prong settings: Scratches on the face or pillowcase are possible.
- Real gold and stainless steel: More robust – but they also benefit from being taken off at night.
Does sleeping with jewelry harm you?
Necklaces
The biggest risk: Necklaces can wrap around your neck or get tangled in your hair and pull during sleep. For thin chains, the risk is minimal – but for thicker chains, pendants with weight, or clasps that can open, caution is advised. Recommendation: Fine chains under 1.5 mm without a heavy pendant can be worn by most people without concern.
Earrings
Stud earrings are the safest sleep jewelry – they lie flat and are hardly bothersome. More dangerous: Dangling earrings and large hoops that can snag on the pillow and pull on the ear. Recommendation: Only small studs or huggies for sleeping.
Rings
While sleeping, hands touch the face – rings with stones or raised settings can leave marks or scratches. Recommendation: Simple band rings without raised elements are harmless. Rings with stones: Take them off.
Bracelets
Bracelets are the most problematic sleep jewelry: They can get tangled in bedding, be bothersome when turning over, and pose an injury risk for children in bed. Recommendation: Always remove bracelets before sleeping.
Exceptions: When it's okay
- Fresh piercing: During the healing phase, the stud should and must remain in – even at night.
- Tight rings after injuries/swelling: If a ring cannot be removed, see a doctor – never remove it by force.
- Wedding rings made of solid gold or platinum: Robust material, no weight – harmless for most.
The best solution: A removal routine
Taking off jewelry in the evening is part of the evening routine, like brushing your teeth. A jewelry dish or a small box by the bed makes it easy. Bonus: Jewelry not worn at night ages slower and retains its shine longer.
