Kurz gesagt: Jewelry While Sleeping: What Can You Leave On, What Should You Take Off? Studs, Rings, Necklaces, and Bracelets in the Night Check – All Tips Here.

Wearing jewelry at night – for some a habit, for others a question. The truth is: Some pieces of jewelry are completely unproblematic while sleeping, while others increase the risk of damage, injury, or skin irritation. In this guide, you'll learn which jewelry is fine to wear while sleeping – and what you should take off before going to bed.

Why jewelry can sometimes be problematic at night

We move while sleeping – sometimes a lot. Jewelry can:

  • Get caught in bedsheets or pillows and tear or bend
  • Leave pressure marks or scratches on the skin
  • Cause knots and tangles in necklaces
  • Corrode sensitive materials due to sweat
  • In rare cases, lead to injuries (especially with rings with sharp edges)

Jewelry you can comfortably sleep in

Small Stud Earrings

Small, flat stud earrings with well-fitting backs are generally completely unproblematic while sleeping. They barely protrude, can't get caught anywhere, and cause almost no pressure marks. Especially suitable: flat titanium studs or small stainless steel studs.

Thin, Smooth Necklaces

A very fine, smooth chain without a pendant can usually also be worn at night – provided it is made of a robust material (stainless steel, titanium). With fine gold or silver chains, there is a risk of knotting, especially with long chains.

Smooth Band Rings

A simple, smooth band ring without protruding stones or edges is usually not a problem while sleeping. Wedding rings are worn by many people permanently – even at night.

Thin Stainless Steel Bracelets

Very fine, flat stainless steel bracelets can also be worn at night if they close securely and don't get caught on pajamas or bedding.

Jewelry you should take off at night

Long Necklaces and Necklaces with Pendants

Long necklaces with pendants can tangle or get caught during sleep. Especially with silver chains, sweat contact at night increases tarnishing. Recommendation: take them off before sleeping and store them hanging up.

Dangling Earrings and Hoops

Dangling earrings, hoops, and ear cuffs can get caught in pillows and be painful if pressure is applied to the ear. Especially with larger hoops, there is a risk of damage to the earlobe with strong movement. Taking them off is recommended.

Rings with Protruding Stones

Rings with high-set stones or sharp settings can leave scratches while sleeping – on the hand itself, on your partner, or on the sheets. Cocktail rings and statement rings definitely belong on the nightstand.

Bracelets with Charms or Pendants

Charm bracelets and structured bracelets with many elements can get caught and tear during sleep – or be uncomfortable. Better to take them off.

Gold-Plated Jewelry

Sweat contact at night significantly accelerates the detachment of gold plating. Always take off gold-plated jewelry before sleeping to extend its lifespan.

Fresh Piercings

Special care is required for freshly pierced earlobes and piercings. If you sleep on the ear with the fresh piercing, pressure can slow down healing and promote infections. Use a travel pillow with a hole or sleep on the other side.

General Recommendation

For the longevity of your jewelry and your own sleep comfort, we recommend: less is more. If you have a safe storage place right next to your bed (e.g., a small jewelry dish), taking off necklaces, earrings, and bracelets is a habit that will benefit your jewelry and give you better sleep.
