Kurz gesagt: Insuring Jewelry: Home Contents Insurance vs. Special Valuables Insurance, Costs, What You Need, and a Step-by-Step Guide to Insuring.

Your most expensive ring is stolen. A necklace of sentimental value is lost on holiday. A treasured heirloom bracelet is damaged during sport. These are scenarios that can happen to anyone – but only a few are protected from loss beforehand by jewellery insurance. In this guide, you will learn when jewellery insurance is really worthwhile, what options are available, and what you need to do.

When is jewellery insurance worthwhile?

As a rule of thumb: for a single item with an insured value of €500 or more, it is worth checking. Below that, home contents insurance usually covers part of it; for expensive individual items, additional protection is advisable.

What does home contents insurance cover?

Most home contents insurance policies cover jewellery theft (burglary) and certain damages – but with limitations:

  • Jewellery is often limited to 20–25% of the sum insured (e.g., for home contents of €80,000 = max. €16,000–€20,000 for jewellery)
  • Loss (e.g., ring swallowed down the drain) is usually NOT covered
  • Damage (e.g., shattered stone) is often NOT covered
  • Theft from a car is often not covered or covered to a limited extent

Special jewellery insurance

Special valuables insurance or "all-risk insurance" for jewellery covers significantly more:

  • Theft (also from car, hotel, on the go)
  • Loss (forgotten, fallen down the drain)
  • Damage (shattered stone, bent ring)
  • Worldwide coverage (on holiday)
  • Often bookable as an extension to home contents insurance

How much does jewellery insurance cost?

As a guideline: 1–2% of the insured value per year. For a ring with an insured value of €3,000, this means an annual premium of €30–€60. In case of loss or damage, the ring would be replaced – for most people, this is a very good ratio.

What you need for insurance

  • Valuation report: A jeweller's valuation report with the current replacement value is the most important prerequisite for expensive pieces
  • Purchase receipts: Original invoices as proof of value
  • Photos: Detailed photos of all sides of each piece
  • Certificates: GIA certificates for diamonds and rare gemstones

Step-by-step: Insuring jewellery

  1. Inventory valuable jewellery (list with photos and descriptions)
  2. Obtain a jeweller's valuation report for pieces over €500
  3. Check home contents insurance: How much jewellery is currently covered?
  4. Identify gaps: What would not be covered in case of damage?
  5. Obtain quotes for valuables insurance (Allianz, AXA, Ergo, etc.)
  6. Conclude insurance, keep documents safe

How to act correctly in case of damage

  • In case of theft: Immediately inform the police and file a report (mandatory for insurance benefits)
  • Document the damage: Photos of the damage, witness statements if possible
  • Inform the insurance company immediately: Observe deadlines (usually 72 hours)
  • Keep all documents ready: Valuation reports, photos, purchase receipts
