Insuring Jewelry: What You Need to Know & How It Works

An engagement ring, an heirloom, a valuable pearl necklace – some jewelry is so significant that its loss or damage would have devastating consequences, not just financially, but emotionally as well. Yet, many people neglect to insure their jewelry.

This guide will show you what you need to know about jewelry insurance – so you don't suffer twice in case of damage.

Why Jewelry Should Be Insured

Jewelry is among the most frequently stolen valuables. Additionally, there are risks such as:

  • Loss (e.g., stone falling out of its setting, chain breaking and getting lost)
  • Burglary (most common claim in home contents insurance)
  • Pickpocketing (especially on vacation)
  • Damage (e.g., ring run over, stone breaking)
  • Fire or water damage

All these risks are often only partially covered or with significant limitations by a standard home contents insurance policy.

Home Contents Insurance vs. Specialized Jewelry Insurance

Home Contents Insurance

Home contents insurance typically covers jewelry up to a certain maximum sum – usually 20–25% of the total insured sum or a maximum of €1,500–€3,000 for jewelry and valuables. Outside your own home (e.g., while traveling or in a hotel), coverage is often severely restricted or non-existent.

Suitable for: Jewelry of low value (under €2,000)

Specialized Jewelry Insurance (All-Risk Policy)

Specialized insurance covers the exact current value or replacement value of a piece of jewelry worldwide and against almost all risks – including simple theft (pickpocketing, loss in a hotel), loss, and damage due to accidents.

Suitable for: Jewelry valued over €2,000 and all heirlooms with high emotional value

What to Look For in Jewelry Insurance

1. New Value vs. Current Value

  • New Value: The insurance pays the current replacement price for an equivalent item. Ideal.
  • Current Value: The insurance pays the current market value of the item – can be lower than expected for vintage pieces.

2. Worldwide Coverage

Make sure your jewelry is insured even when you travel. Some home contents policies offer worldwide coverage only at an extra cost.

3. Inclusion of Loss

Loss (not theft!) is not automatically insured. Make sure that unintentional loss is also included.

4. Deductible

Many insurance policies have a deductible (your own contribution in case of a claim). The lower it is, the better – but the higher the premium will be.

5. Appraisal and Documentation

The insurance company needs a valuation. For valuable items, a professional appraisal by an expert is a prerequisite.

How to Properly Document Your Jewelry

In case of a claim, you must prove what was lost. Therefore, document:

  1. High-quality photos (from all sides, details of the setting, hallmarks)
  2. Proof of purchase with date and price
  3. Certificates (GIA, IGI, or similar)
  4. Professional appraisal (especially important for heirlooms without proof of purchase)
  5. Secure all documents externally (cloud storage or safe deposit box)

How Much Does Jewelry Insurance Cost?

As a guideline: approx. 1–2% of the insured value per year as an annual premium. Examples:

Jewelry Value Annual Premium (approx.)
€5,000 €50 – €100
€10,000 €100 – €200
€25,000 €250 – €500
€50,000 €500 – €1,000

The exact premium depends on the insurer, chosen coverage, and deductible.

Where Can You Insure Jewelry?

In Germany, the following providers offer specialized jewelry insurance:

  • Allianz (home contents add-on or specialized policy)
  • Zurich (valuables insurance)
  • HDI (specialized jewelry insurance)
  • AXA (all-risk coverage)
  • Specialized brokers for art and valuables (often best conditions)

FAQ: Jewelry Insurance

Is my wedding ring covered by home contents insurance? Often only up to the value limits of home contents insurance (usually €1,500–€3,000 for valuables in total). For a valuable wedding ring, additional insurance is recommended.

Do I need an appraisal to insure jewelry? For items over €3,000, most insurers require a professional appraisal as the basis for the insured sum.

What happens if the insured value was incorrectly set? If the insured value is set too low (underinsurance), the insurance company will only reimburse proportionally in the event of a claim. Regular re-evaluation is therefore important – especially when gold and gemstone prices rise.

Is pickpocketing abroad covered? Only with all-risk policies that include worldwide coverage. Check your policy carefully.
