In tourist hotspots, synthetic stones or dyed cheap stones are often sold as real rubies, sapphires, or emeralds. Without a certificate, you cannot be sure.

Protection: Only buy gemstone jewelry with a GIA or GRS certificate. Without a certificate: choose inexpensive, beautiful pieces without claiming high value.

Pitfall 2: Unclear Gold Content

Gold hallmarks in other countries can differ: 750 (DE/EU) = 18k (US/UK), but not every country uses the same standards. In Turkey, 14k (585) and 18k (750) are common; in some Asian countries, different systems apply.

Protection: Know the local standards or only buy pieces with a hallmark you are familiar with.
