What is an Emerald?
Emerald is a variety of the beryl mineral (beryllium aluminum silicate); its intense green color is created by chromium and/or vanadium inclusions. Without these trace elements, beryl would be colorless – with them, the characteristic emerald green emerges. Mohs hardness: 7.5–8.

Color – the Decisive Criterion
With emeralds, color is even more important than with diamonds. The ideal emerald green is: intense and rich, not too light green (too little chromium) and not too dark green (too opaque), with a slightly bluish undertone (Colombian characteristic). Colombian emeralds from the Muzo and Chivor mines are considered the world's best – their deep, rich, slightly bluish green is unmistakable.
Inclusions: Jardin
Almost all natural emeralds have inclusions – in gemology, this is not considered a flaw but rather proof of their naturalness. The French term "Jardin" (garden) describes the organic network of inclusions. Emeralds are therefore evaluated with less strict clarity standards than diamonds. A clear emerald is exceptionally rare.
Treatments
Almost all emeralds are treated with oil or resin – this fills fine cracks and improves transparency. This is standard industry practice and accepted. Untreated emeralds of high quality are extremely rare and accordingly expensive. Cedarwood oil treatment is considered the most natural and valuable treatment.
Origin
Colombia (Muzo, Chivor, Coscuez), Zambia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia are the most important countries of origin. Colombian emeralds are traditionally the most valuable.
