When you buy jewelry, you encounter it everywhere: the 925 hallmark. But what does it actually mean? Is sterling silver (925) real silver? Is it better or worse than other types of silver? And how can you tell if your jewelry really contains sterling silver? This article clears up all questions regarding the most commonly used jewelry silver standard.

What is sterling silver?

Pure silver (999) is more valuable, but it is too soft for jewelry making; it would bend, scratch, and quickly lose its shape. The addition of copper makes the silver significantly more stable and durable without compromising its noble character.

What different silver hallmarks are there?

• 999 (fine silver / pure silver): 99.9% pure silver, too soft for most jewelry pieces. Rarely used in manufacturing.
• 925 (sterling silver): The world standard for jewelry. Durable, beautiful, solid.
• 900 (coin silver): 90% silver. Historically used in silver coins, today rarer in jewelry.
• 835: 83.5% silver. An older German standard, especially found in antique jewelry.
• 800: 80% silver. Cheaper variant, often in old silverware or decorative objects.

Where can you find the 925 hallmark?

In high-quality solid jewelry, the 925 hallmark is clearly stamped, usually:

• Inside rings (on the ring shank)
• On the clasp of necklaces and bracelets
• On the back of pendants
• On the post of earrings

If a hallmark is missing, it does not necessarily mean that no silver is present; in the case of very small or filigree pieces, the stamp is sometimes not possible. A reputable retailer will, however, always state the material composition.

925 silver vs. "silver jewelry", watch out for cheap goods

Not every "silver jewelry" is sterling silver. Watch out for:

• Silver-plated jewelry: Copper or brass with a wafer-thin layer of silver, not silver jewelry in the true sense, tarnishes quickly and peels off.
• Alpaca / German silver: Contains no silver at all! It is a copper-nickel-zinc alloy that looks silvery.
• Nickel-plated jewelry: Can trigger allergies and only looks good in the short term.

Always buy jewelry from providers who clearly identify the material, and look for the 925 hallmark.

Does 925 silver tarnish?

Yes, even 925 sterling silver tarnishes over time. The copper content reacts with sulfur compounds in the air and forms a dark layer (silver sulfide). This can be slowed down by:

• Regular wearing (friction polishes the piece)
• Dry, airtight storage
• Wiping after wearing
• Anti-tarnish strips in the jewelry box

Rhodium-plated sterling silver (coated with a thin layer of rhodium) tarnishes much more slowly and looks fresh for longer.

Is 925 silver resistant?

Sterling silver is well-tolerated by most people. However, reactions can occur in cases of silver allergies (rare) or copper allergies (the additive). Anyone who is sensitive should choose rhodium-plated silver; the rhodium layer prevents direct skin contact with the alloy metals.
