What is Topaz?
Topaz is an aluminum-silicate-fluoride mineral. Pure topaz is colorless – the various colors are caused by impurities or color centers in the crystal lattice. Mohs hardness: 8 – very hard, making it ideal for everyday jewelry. Typical characteristic: Topaz has perfect cleavage – it can break exactly in half with a strong blow, so protect it from impacts.
Topaz Colors and Their Names
Blue Topaz (the most popular)
Almost all blue topazes on the market are colorless and have been colored blue through irradiation and heat treatment – natural blue topaz is very rare. Three shades of blue with their own trade names:
- Sky Blue Topaz: Light, clear sky blue – fresh and summery
- Swiss Blue Topaz: Medium, vibrant blue – the most popular shade of blue
- London Blue Topaz: Deep, almost indigo dark blue – very elegant and profound
Imperial Topaz (the most precious)
Natural orange-yellow to orange-pink – the rarest and most valuable topaz. "Imperial" because it was historically reserved for the Russian imperial family. Today, mainly from Brazil. Warm honey-orange that looks stunning in yellow gold.
Champagne Topaz
Delicate golden yellow to champagne – very warm and flattering. Often used as an alternative to citrine.
Mystic Topaz
Colorless topaz with a titanium-based surface coating – shimmers in all the colors of the rainbow. Very modern and striking, but the coating is less robust than the stone itself.
Pink and Red Topaz
Very rare in nature. Achievable synthetically or by heating Imperial Topaz. Highly sought after.
