I was standing in front of the bathroom mirror, holding a gold chain in my hand that I had bought for just under 80 euros six months earlier, and I had to look twice.

At the spot where the chain rested against my chest, where the most friction occurs, something silvery was shimmering through. The gold was gone. Just like that. Rubbed off, smeared, vanished.

I threw the chain away. And then I started thinking about jewelry more seriously than ever before.

Back then, I had no idea what gold-plated jewelry actually was. I had bought a chain that looked "gold-colored" and felt "gold-colored," and I assumed that was enough. What I didn't know: The layer of gold on this chain was only a few micrometers thin. For comparison: A human hair is about 70 micrometers thick. This chain had a gold layer thinner than one-tenth of a hair. And I had wondered why it was rubbing off.

What really annoyed me back then wasn't the loss of that one chain. It was the realization of how much money I had spent on similar items in the years before. Bracelets that left my wrists green. Earrings that suddenly looked silver even though I thought they were gold. Small losses, viewed individually. But together, real money that was simply gone.

What is gold-plated jewelry really?

If there is no stamp on a piece of jewelry—meaning no 585, no 750, no 925—then it is not a precious metal. Period. That sounds harsh, but it is the reality. "Gold-colored," "gold-plated," "gold-plated," or even "18K gold-plated" all mean the same thing: a cheaper metal (usually brass or copper) has been coated with a paper-thin layer of gold. The gold content of the total weight is negligibly low.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. Gold-plated jewelry has its place, for trend pieces that you won't wear after a season anyway, for inexpensive accessories that you consciously see as fashion and not as an investment. The problem starts when you pay real prices for gold-plated jewelry. And that happens constantly because brand names and fancy packaging disguise the material.

I’ll say it straight: Some of the most well-known jewelry brands in Germany primarily sell gold-plated silver at prices where you would expect to be holding real gold. That is legal, that is market standard, but it is also something you should know as a buyer.

The difference I hadn't expected

When I held a real 585 gold chain in my hand for the first time, I mean a solid one, with a stamp, with a specified weight, there was this sense of weight. Gold has a density you can feel. A gold-plated chain feels light. Not light in the sense of pleasant, but light in the sense of: there isn't much in there. A real gold chain has a weight you can't describe but can immediately recognize.

But that wasn't even the most important difference. The most important was: The gold remains. I still wear a chain today that I bought several years ago. It looks exactly as it did on the first day. No rubbed-off spots, no silvery shimmering through. I shower with it, sleep with it, wear it every day. And it will still look the same when I pass it on at some point.

That is the actual value of real gold: not that it is expensive, but that it is durable. It doesn't change. It doesn't oxidize. It doesn't rub off. It is simply there.

How to recognize real gold

It is actually quite simple if you know what you are looking for. Every piece of real gold in Germany must bear a hallmark. 585 means 14 karats, 58.5 percent pure gold; the rest are alloy metals for hardness and stability. 750 means 18 karats, 75 percent gold. These stamps are required by law and are officially embossed.

No stamp? No real gold. It is that simple. Of course, there are exceptions for very old or very small jewelry, but as a rule of thumb, it is reliable.

And then there is the weight test. Real gold jewelry is heavier than you expect. If a large, wide chain feels like nothing, it is either hollow or not real gold. Both are a warning sign.

What did that mean for me?

I shop differently today. Not more, not more often; on the contrary. I buy less frequently and more purposefully. Instead of three gold-plated chains, I buy one made of real 585 gold. That costs more all at once, but calculated over three years, I save money. No replacement purchases, no rubbed-off pieces, no throwing things away.

And I wear less, but with more meaning. Every piece in my jewelry box is real. That might sound exaggerated, but it feels good. I no longer reach for a chain and wonder if it will still be gold-colored today.

The chain I threw away back then cost me 80 euros and lasted six months. A comparable chain made of real 585 gold would have cost perhaps 160 euros back then and would still look the same today as it did on the first day.

That is the calculation I made too late.
