- Almost all emeralds are oiled (cedarwood oil) – accepted and standard
- No ultrasound, no steam cleaner – dissolves the oil
- Only lukewarm soapy water for cleaning

- Colombia (Muzo, Chivor): World's best quality
- Zambia: Slightly darker blue-green – also high quality
