What is an emerald?

1 min read
Quick answer: Emerald is green beryl with natural inclusions (jardin). Almost always oiled – standard, not a flaw. Colombia is the best origin.

Emerald is green beryl, its color created by chromium and vanadium impurities. It is the most coveted green gemstone in the world – but is almost always delivered with natural inclusions (the so-called "jardin"), which is not a flaw, but rather a sign of authenticity.

What is the Jardin?

Natural inclusions and fine cracks in emeralds are called jardin (French for garden). A completely clear emerald would be suspicious – inclusions prove its natural origin.

Emerald Care

  • Almost all emeralds are oiled (cedarwood oil) – accepted and standard
  • No ultrasound, no steam cleaner – dissolves the oil
  • Only lukewarm soapy water for cleaning

Best Origin

  • Colombia (Muzo, Chivor): World's best quality
  • Zambia: Slightly darker blue-green – also high quality
