What is Cubic Zirconia?
Cubic Zirconia (ZrO₂) is a laboratory-created material with diamond-like optical properties. It was first produced for jewelry purposes in the Soviet Union in 1976 and has since revolutionized the fashion jewelry world. Important: Cubic Zirconia is not the same as Zircon (a natural gemstone) – they are chemically completely different.
The Optical Comparison
Brilliance: Cubic Zirconia has similar light refraction to diamond and sparkles very similarly. Laypersons cannot distinguish a well-cut CZ from a diamond.
Fire: Cubic Zirconia even has more fire (rainbow effect) than diamond – the colorful sparkle is stronger. Some connoisseurs recognize cubic zirconia precisely by this: too much fire.
Size: Cubic Zirconia is 1.7x denser than diamond. A 1-carat cubic zirconia is therefore smaller than a 1-carat diamond. That's why CZs are often compared by size (millimeters) instead of carats.
Hardness and Durability
Diamond: Mohs 10 – hardest natural material, hardly ever scratches.
Cubic Zirconia: Mohs 8.5 – very hard, but over time microscopic scratches can dull the brilliance. After years of daily wear, cubic zirconia loses its fresh brilliance – this effect is called "milky."
Conclusion: For daily worn rings over decades, diamond or moissanite is more durable. For fashion jewelry that is not worn daily: cubic zirconia is perfectly sufficient.
