What is Cubic Zirconia (CZ)?
Cubic Zirconia is a synthetically produced, colorless mineral (zirconium dioxide) that was developed in 1976 and has since been used in jewelry. It has a Mohs hardness of 8–8.5 (diamond: 10) and refracts light very similarly to diamond – which is why it is hardly distinguishable to the untrained eye.

Appearance
Both sparkle similarly. For those who look closely: cubic zirconia refracts light slightly differently – it shows more rainbow colors (dispersion) than diamond, which reflects more white light. For many, CZ is even "sparklier." To the naked eye from a normal distance: indistinguishable.
Hardness and Durability
Diamond, with Mohs 10, is the hardest material on Earth – indestructible in everyday life. Cubic zirconia, with Mohs 8.5, is hard enough for everyday use but can accumulate micro-scratches over years and appear slightly "dull." Occasional polishing keeps CZ fresh.
Weight
Cubic zirconia is approximately 75% heavier than diamond for the same volume. A well-trained gemologist can distinguish them by weight alone – however, as a wearer, you won't feel it.
Price
This is the biggest difference: a 1-carat diamond in VS1, G costs €4,000–€8,000. A 1-carat CZ costs €5–€20. Price ratio approximately 500:1. For fashion jewelry that is regularly exchanged, this is a decisive argument.
Value
Diamonds retain a large part of their value (although resale is well below the purchase price). CZ has no material value – you only pay for design and craftsmanship.
