Kurz gesagt: Buying a Bangle: Bangle vs. Bracelet, Cultural History, All Types (Full Bangle, Cuff, Hammered, Engraved, Gemstone-Set), Stacking Guide and Sizing.

The bangle is one of the oldest and most timeless pieces of jewellery ever. Unlike a bracelet, it has no clasp and is slipped over the hand. Despite its simplicity, in some cultures it is the most significant piece of jewellery. This guide explains the bangle in all its facets.

What is the difference between a bangle and a bracelet?

  • Bangle: Closed or open ring without a clasp – is slipped over the hand. Rigid or slightly flexible.
  • Bracelet: Has a clasp (carabiner, lobster, magnet) – is placed around the wrist and fastened.

Bangles are easier to care for (no clasp that can break), look more substantial and have more cultural depth.

Bangle Cultural History

The bangle is present worldwide: In ancient Egypt, pharaohs wore wide gold bangles as a symbol of power. In India, the bangle is a central piece of wedding and festive jewellery – married women wear specific bangles as a marital status symbol. In Celtic tradition, bangles were worn as war booty and a sign of power. In modern fashion jewellery, the bangle is ubiquitous due to its stacking effect with multiple bangles.

Types of Bangles

Closed Bangle (Full Bangle)

Completely closed metal ring. The most classic form. Must fit over the hand – therefore measure hand circumference (widest part of the hand). Holds perfectly and does not slip.

Open Bangle (Cuff Bangle)

Has an opening that can be easily bent open and closed. Advantage: Fits many different wrists. Disadvantage: Opening can be bothersome. Very modern and trendy.

Hammered Bangle

Irregular, hammered surface instead of smoothly polished. Appears handmade, organic, very popular in boho and minimal jewellery. Each piece slightly different.

Engraved Bangle

Smooth surface with engraved pattern or text. Ideal for personalised bangles with a date, name or message. The most classic engraved jewellery piece.

Embellished Bangle

Set with stones – as a pavé bangle with continuous stone setting or with individual statement stones. Glamorous and festive.

Bangle Stacking: Multiple Bangles Worn Together

The best thing about bangles: They stack perfectly. 3–7 narrow bangles worn together create a dramatic, resonant look. The art lies in the mix: smooth + hammered + engraved. All in the same metal for coherence. Jingling is part of the experience – the sound of the bangle stack is its own statement.

Determining Bangle Sizes Correctly

For a closed bangle: Measure the circumference of the hand at its widest point (with thumb pressed together) and add 1–2 cm. Diameter table: Hand circumference 15 cm = bangle diameter approx. 5.5 cm. Hand circumference 18 cm = approx. 6.5 cm.
