Buying a Stainless Steel Ring: Size, Width, and the Two Things You Can't Change
In short: A stainless steel ring cannot be resized, either by expanding or reducing its size. That's why size is the most important decision when buying, more important than design and price. Measure the circumference in the evening at normal room temperature, and for wide rings 6 millimeters or more, add half a size.
With gold, you call the goldsmith and have it stretched out by half a size. With stainless steel, that's not possible. Measure correctly, don't guess
Take a narrow strip of paper, wrap it around your finger, mark the overlap, and measure the length in millimeters. The result is directly the German ring size. There are three points where most people go wrong: fingers are narrower in the morning than in the evening, narrower in winter than in summer, and the ring must fit over the knuckle, not just around the narrowest part below it. Width changes the perceived size
A 2-millimeter narrow ring fits loosely at size 54. The same circumference with an 8-millimeter width feels tight because more material has to pass over the joint and less skin can breathe. As a rule of thumb from practice: for widths of 6 millimeters or more, order half a size larger; for 10 millimeters or more, a whole size larger.
