But don't worry: with our step-by-step guide, you can easily measure your ring size at home and thus determine which ring fits you perfectly. Whether you're treating yourself to a piece of jewelry or buying a ring as a gift – this guide will help you.

What do ring sizes mean?

In Germany, ring size is specified as the inner diameter in millimeters or the inner circumference in millimeters. The most common systems:

  • German / EU system: Inner circumference in mm (e.g., ring size 54 = 54 mm inner circumference)
  • US system: Numerical scale (e.g., US 7 ≈ EU 54)
  • UK system: Letters (e.g., UK N ≈ EU 54)

The most common ring sizes for women in Germany are between 48 and 58, with 52–54 being the most prevalent. For men, the standard is usually between 58 and 66.

Method 1: Measure ring size with a string

This method is simple and only requires a string or strip of paper and a ruler:

  1. Cut a narrow strip of paper or take a string, approx. 10 cm long.
  2. Wrap it snugly around the finger you intend for the ring. Make sure it fits over the knuckle.
  3. Mark the spot where the end of the strip meets the beginning.
  4. Lay the string/paper strip flat on a ruler and measure the length in millimeters.
  5. This length corresponds to the inner circumference = your EU ring size.

Example: Circumference = 54 mm → Ring size 54

Method 2: Determine ring size using the inner diameter

If you already have a well-fitting ring, you can measure its inner diameter:

  1. Place the ring on a ruler and measure the inner diameter (from inner edge to inner edge) in millimeters.
  2. Multiply the diameter by Pi (3.14159).
  3. The result is your inner circumference = EU ring size.

Example: Diameter 17.2 mm × 3.14159 = 54 mm → Ring size 54

Conversion table: EU, US and UK ring sizes

Here is an overview of the most common sizes:

  • EU 48 = US 4.5 = UK I
  • EU 50 = US 5 = UK J
  • EU 52 = US 6 = UK L
  • EU 54 = US 7 = UK N
  • EU 56 = US 7.5 = UK O
  • EU 58 = US 8.5 = UK Q
  • EU 60 = US 9.5 = UK S
  • EU 62 = US 10 = UK T

Important tips for accurate measuring

To ensure the most accurate measurement, please note the following points:

  • Time of day: Fingers can be narrower in the morning than in the evening. It's best to measure around noon or in the evening for the most reliable result.
  • Temperature: Fingers contract in cold weather and expand in warm weather. Measure at normal room temperature.
  • Consider the knuckle: If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, orient yourself to the knuckle size and choose a ring that goes over the knuckle.
  • Wide rings: Wide rings (over 6 mm) fit tighter than narrow rings – choose half to a full size larger here.
  • Measure multiple times: Measure your finger two to three times and take the average value.

What to do if the ring doesn't fit?

Despite careful measuring, it can happen that a ring doesn't fit perfectly. You have the following options:

  • Professional jeweler: In most cases, a jeweler can resize rings by 1–2 sizes, either making them larger or smaller.
  • Ring sizers/adjusters: Small silicone or metal clips that are inserted into the ring to make it tighter. Inexpensive and practical for a temporary solution.
  • Exchange: When buying online, pay attention to the shop's exchange policy.

Finding ring size as a gift

You want to give someone a ring but don't know their size? Here are a few clever tricks:

  • Secretly borrow one of the person's rings and measure its inner diameter.
  • Ask friends or family members of the person.
  • Buy an open ring or adjustable ring – it fits almost any finger.
  • Choose a gift voucher that allows the person to choose their own ring.
