Welche Kettenstärke hält tägliches Tragen aus?

Ab etwa 1,5 mm ist eine Kette alltagstauglich, ab 2 mm wird sie deutlich unempfindlicher. Unter 1 mm reissen Ketten regelmäßig, wenn sie am Pulloverkragen hängen bleiben. Die Kettenart spielt mit: Venezianer- und Schlangenketten sind bei gleicher Stärke anfälliger für Knicke als Panzerketten.

Schadet Schweiß einer Goldkette?

Showering is not an issue, but chlorinated and salt water are: chlorine attacks the solder joints and makes the chain brittle over the years. Many people buy a chain for special occasions and end up wearing it every day. That is perfectly fine, but it requires a different purchasing decision than a piece of jewelry for twelve evenings a year.

Where a chain gives way first

Almost always at the transition between the last link and the clasp eyelet. This is where the tension concentrates, and the eyelet is often only bent and not soldered. If the eyelet opens up, the chain slips out and is lost, usually unnoticed. A second weak point is the spring mechanism in the lobster clasp, which eventually stops closing fully due to sand or cream residue.

Two measures help. First: check the clasp once a month by gently pulling the eyelet apart. Second: for chains starting at €40, have a spring ring replaced with a lobster clasp; this costs €15 to €30 at a jeweler.

The cost calculation

With a solid gold chain, repairs add up over the years. A new clasp costs €30 to €60, a soldered break €25 to €50, and re-gilding white gold €40 to €90. If you calculate that over five years of daily wear, you quickly end up with an additional €100 to €200.

Two-minute maintenance

Place in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap once a week, go through the links with a soft toothbrush, rinse off, and rub dry with a microfiber cloth. Drying is important because residual moisture in the links leads to dark spots on silver and brass.

The right length for daily wear

A chain that constantly slips under the collar or chafes on the collarbone will be taken off after two weeks.
