The chemistry behind the green finger

Brass and similar alloys contain copper. When copper meets sweat (slightly acidic, saline), greenish copper compounds are formed. The same chemistry that patinates copper roofs, just on your finger. Accelerators: summer, sports, hand cream, dishwater. With "gold-plated" cheap rings, it happens as soon as the wafer-thin gold layer on the inside has worn through, usually after weeks (why this happens).

Harmless or allergy? The difference

Just green staining without discomfort: copper oxide. Cosmetic, not health-related, washable. Itching, redness, blisters: this looks like a contact reaction (often nickel-associated). A different issue that belongs in the skin guide and should be checked by a doctor if it persists. Rule of thumb: Green is chemistry, itching is the immune system.

The immediate and permanent solution

Immediate: Wash your finger with soap. The staining comes off without a trace.
Home remedy warning: Clear nail polish on the inside of the ring is the well-known trick. It only lasts for days, peels off unappetizingly, and fixes nothing.
Permanent: Rings made of non-reactive material. Stainless steel does not contain copper as a reactant in this form; no green tint, no matter how much summer, sports, or dishwater (the material background).
