What is gold plating?

Gold plating (also known as electroplating) is a process in which a thin layer of gold is electrolytically applied to a base metal. The base metal can be silver, stainless steel, brass, zinc, or copper. The gold layer has a specific thickness, and everything depends on this thickness.

What distinguishes the different types of gold plating?

Standard gold plating (Flash Plating)

Layer thickness: 0.175 microns or less. This is the cheapest and most common type of gold plating. You will find it on 90% of fashion jewelry under €20. Durability: Weeks to a few months with regular wear. The gold layer is as thin as a breath; simple friction is enough to make the base metal visible.

Gold-plated (Standard)

Layer thickness: 0.5 to 1 micron. Slightly more durable than flash plating, but still relatively thin. Durability: 3 to 12 months with regular wear. Can wear off quickly due to sweat, perfume, and friction.

Gold-filled

Not to be confused with gold-plated: In gold-filled jewelry, a real layer of gold is mechanically bonded to the base material. The gold layer makes up 5% of the total weight. Significantly thicker and more durable. Durability: 10 to 30 years with proper care. Often confused, but qualitatively much better than standard gold plating.

Gold vermeil (Pronunciation: "ver-may")

The European standard for solid gold-plated jewelry: At least 2.5 microns of gold on a 925 sterling silver base. Durability: 1 to 5 years with regular wear and proper care. This is the standard term you should look for when buying; it reliably indicates both layer thickness AND base material.

PVD coating (Physical Vapor Deposition)

State-of-the-art gold plating technology: Gold is applied via a physical vacuum process. Harder and more scratch-resistant than electrolytic gold plating. Often based on stainless steel. Durability: 3 to 10 years. Very popular for modern jewelry and watches.

What shortens the durability of gold plating?

Sweat and skin oils: Accelerate wear the most; wiping off daily extends durability
Perfume and body care products directly on jewelry: Chemical reactions attack the gold layer
