An ultrasonic cleaner works using cavitation. Microscopically small bubbles form in the water, which collapse suddenly, knocking dirt off the surface in the process. This pressure wave is exactly the problem for anything that is porous or layered.

If you use it

Lukewarm water up to a maximum of 40 degrees, a drop of dish soap, two to three minutes. Longer is pointless and only increases the risk. Do not stack jewelry pieces, otherwise they will hit each other. After the cycle, rinse thoroughly and rub dry with a microfiber cloth, otherwise water spots will become visible again.

A detail that is often overlooked: If stones are set in prongs, ultrasound can completely loosen an already loose setting. The stone will then end up at the bottom of the basin. Give the stone a quick wiggle before cleaning; if anything moves, the piece belongs at the jeweler's instead of in the machine.

Why is stainless steel unremarkable here?

Stainless steel has no coating that could flake off, and it forms a passive oxide layer in the air that renews itself. That is why it is one of the few materials where ultrasound truly only cleans. You can clean jewelry made of solid stainless steel from Corelune without any restrictions, such as a slim stainless steel ring or a link chain in which cream residues settle in the links.

For gold-colored pieces with a PVD or galvanic layer, stick to hand cleaning. Two minutes in soapy water, soft toothbrush, dry off. The result is almost identical. You can find the easy-care pieces under waterproof jewelry.

The alternative without a machine

A bowl of lukewarm water, a drop of mild dish soap, soak for five minutes, then clean the gaps with a soft toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly afterwards, as soap residues leave a dull film. For 90 percent of cases, this is sufficient.

What you should check before the first cycle

Three checks take less than a minute in total and save you from expensive surprises. First: Is every stone secure? Tap lightly against the setting with your fingernail; if anything rattles, the piece belongs at the jeweler's. Second: Is it glued anywhere instead of soldered? In inexpensive fashion jewelry, stones and pearls are often glued in, and the glue reliably dissolves in a warm ultrasonic bath. Third: Are there blackened depressions or a matte surface treatment? Both are partially removed by ultrasound.

A practical order for home use: first all non-critical stainless steel pieces in one go, then change the water and do the more sensitive pieces individually. The water becomes visibly cloudy after two to three cycles, and the dirt will otherwise settle again.

What a piece costs tells you less about its durability than most people assume. Extra charges for elaborate clasps pay off; extra charges for packaging and names do not. In the end, how well it fits your own style counts more than any price bracket.

How do I recognize that a coating is giving way?

First at edges, clasps, and the inside of rings, because constant friction occurs there. The color tone becomes cooler or grayish at these spots. This is normal wear and not a material defect; it can be slowed down by rotating between several pieces.
