What accelerates tarnishing

Wool and felt contain sulfur, which is why a jewelry box with a felt lining is the worst place to store silver. The same applies to rubber bands, onions, and eggs nearby, chlorinated water, and cosmetics containing sulfur compounds. Your own skin also plays a role: people who sweat a lot or take certain medications will see tarnishing occur much faster.

One point is often misunderstood. Wearing silver keeps it bright longer than storing it away, because friction against skin and clothing constantly rubs off the fresh tarnish layer. A chain worn daily stays brighter than the same chain in a drawer.

Cleaning, once it has happened

A silver polishing cloth is the best choice for light tarnish because it works mechanically and does not remove any substance. For heavy tarnish, an aluminum foil bath works: aluminum foil in a bowl, hot water, a tablespoon of baking soda, and leave the jewelry in for two minutes.
