Why does silver tarnish at all?

Silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air (mainly hydrogen sulfide H₂S and sulfur dioxide SO₂) to form black silver sulfide. This is not dirt, but a chemical reaction. The more sulfur compounds in the environment, the faster the process. It happens faster in cities (exhaust fumes), near rubber, next to certain foods (eggs, onions), and in high humidity.

Method 1: Store airtight

The most effective of all preventive measures: store silver jewelry in an airtight zip-lock bag, squeezing the air out. Without air contact, there is no sulfur contact, no tarnishing. For jewelry not worn daily, this is the absolute #1 recommendation.

Method 2: Tarnish strips

These small paper strips (available in jewelry and photography supply stores) contain activated carbon and absorb sulfur compounds from the air inside the jewelry box. Simply place them in the jewelry box and replace them every 6 months. Very effective and inexpensive.

Method 3: Chalk in the jewelry box

A small piece of chalk absorbs moisture; less moisture means slower oxidation. Replace the chalk every few months if it crumbles or turns gray. The cheapest of all preventive methods.

Method 4: Include silica gel packets

These small packets (found in shoeboxes, vitamin packs, etc.) bind moisture. Placed in the jewelry box, they significantly delay the tarnishing process. Silica gel can be reactivated in the oven at 100°C when saturated.

Method 5: Put on jewelry last

Perfume, lotion, hairspray—all of these contain compounds that accelerate tarnishing. Always put on jewelry last, after all care products have completely absorbed or evaporated. This simple sequence significantly extends the lifespan of silver jewelry.

Method 6: Do not store in the bathroom

The bathroom is the worst environment for silver jewelry: high humidity, steam, soap residues in the air. Store silver jewelry in the bedroom or in a dry wardrobe.

Method 7: Wipe off immediately after wearing
