A new ear piercing is a small but significant decision – it literally opens up new possibilities for your jewelry world. Piercing or gun piercing – which is better?
There are two common methods for ear piercing, and they differ significantly:
Piercing Needle (at a piercer)
A professional piercer uses a sterile hollow needle that cleanly cuts through the tissue. The result is a clean channel that heals faster and carries less risk of infection. This is clearly recommended for all piercings, especially cartilage piercings.
Ear Piercing Gun (at a jeweler / in drugstores)
The ear piercing gun shoots the stud through the ear. It's faster and more common, but this method crushes the tissue, which can slow down healing and increase the risk of infection. Acceptable for standard earlobe piercings – not recommended for cartilage piercings.
What happens during the piercing?
The process itself only takes a few seconds. Expect a brief, sharp pain of 1–3 seconds – comparable to a vaccination shot. Afterwards, it might briefly burn or throb, which quickly subsides. For most people, the piercing is much less painful than feared.
Initial Jewelry – what's important?
The initial jewelry stays in the ear for the entire healing period – usually 6–8 weeks for the earlobe. That's why the choice of material is particularly important:
- Surgical Stainless Steel 3116L: The most common recommendation. Hypoallergenic, affordable, and durable.
- Titanium: The most hypoallergenic material, ideal for allergy sufferers.
- Niobium: Like titanium, very well tolerated, available in many colors.
- 14-karat Gold: High-quality option, but make sure it's nickel-free.
No silver, no brass, no gold-plated jewelry as initial jewelry – these materials can cause allergies or promote infections.
Healing Times by Ear Type
- Earlobe: 6–8 weeks for initial healing, 3–6 months for complete healing
- Helix (upper cartilage): 6–12 months
- Tragus: 6–12 months
- Conch (inner cartilage): 6–12 months
- Daith: 6–9 months
Caring for Your New Piercing
Good care is key to complication-free healing:
- Clean 2x daily: With sterile isotonic saline spray (NaCl 0.9%) or special piercing cleaning solution. No alcohol, no hydrogen peroxide – these dry out the tissue.
- Do not twist: The old myth of having to twist the stud daily is outdated. Movement irritates the tissue and slows down healing.
- Keep it clean: Keep hair care products, makeup, and perfume away from the ear.
- Sleep: Sleep on your back or stomach to avoid pressure on the ear. Change pillowcase frequently.
- Hands off: Touch as little as possible – bacteria from hands are the most common cause of infection.
Signs of Normal Healing vs. Infection
Normal: Slight redness, swelling, crusts around the stud in the first few weeks. These are signs of the normal healing process.
Warning signs (see a doctor): Severe swelling, pus (yellowish-green), intense pain after the first few days, fever, or excessive warmth around the ear.
When can I change the initial jewelry?
At the earliest after 6 weeks for earlobes, and for cartilage piercings only after 6–12 months. Only change the jewelry when the ear is completely pain-free and healed. For the first change, it's advisable to visit a piercer.
