Brass consists largely of copper. Sweat is slightly acidic and contains salts. When the two meet, green copper compounds form, which rub off onto the skin. With a gold-plated brass ring, this doesn't happen immediately, but only when the gold layer on the inside of the ring has worn away. That is exactly where the friction is greatest, which is why the inside is almost always the first spot.

Warm weather accelerates this because there is more sweat involved. If you notice the effect for the first time in July and never in winter, it's not a new ring, but a different season.

Is the green residue harmful to your health?

For most people, no. It involves copper salts on the skin surface that can be removed with water and soap. However, if you notice reddened or itchy skin under the ring, you should take the piece off and have a doctor determine the cause instead of continuing to wear it.

Does clear nail polish on the inside of the ring help?

In the short term, yes; in the long term, no. The polish creates a barrier layer between the metal and the skin, but it rubs off within a few weeks and must be reapplied. For a ring you wear daily, changing the material is the less laborious option.

Why does the same ring leave marks on one person and not on another?

Because the pH value and salt content of sweat differ significantly between people. Hand creams, medication, and how much someone sweats also play a role. That is why there is no reliable test other than wearing it yourself, and that is why copper-free material is the safer choice.

Does a ring fit over the knuckle if it fits on the finger?

Not automatically. Always measure at the widest point, i.e., over the knuckle, and then check whether the ring is not too loose on the finger. If there is a big difference between the two, a wider ring is the more stable solution.
